Wadena’s history

Wadena sits on the eastern shore of the Quill Lakes, east of Saskatoon and northwest of Yorkton. The town takes its name from Wadena, Minnesota, the home of some of its early settlers, who were of Scandinavian American descent. The Minnesota town was itself named after a Chippewa/Saulteaux chief.

Today Wadena is the administrative centre of the Rural Municipality of Lakeview, and it is also home to the administrative headquarters of the Fishing Lake First Nation band government.

The town is known for birdwatching and hunting, since the Quill Lakes lie along a major flight path. South of town on Highway 35, the Wadena and District Museum holds an annual Vintage Day in July.

Wadena has also been home to some well-known people, among them senator and broadcaster Pamela Wallin, Chicago Black Hawks player, captain and coach Keith Magnuson, who was born and grew up here, and Leonard Lee, founder of Lee Valley Tools.
